Savannah 2007
April 27 - 29, 2007
|
Our activity for April was to Savannah on the 27th to the 29th. We meet at Denny's on 46 in Sanford at 7:00 after breakfast; and headed up I-4 to 95. Once in Georgia we pulled off highway 17 and toured the rice plantation from the 1700's. There was a movie about the Rice Plantation; and how it was owned by one family and maintained though the 1800's when it then was changed to a dairy farm. The last living sisters never married but wanted the land to be preserved and lived here until they died in 1970's. The land to day is kept as a museum and shows how they lived.
We then headed to Savannah for lunch at Uncle Bubba's seafood place near the water. Frank had The Keystone Cops revisited Savannah on the way but we found Uncle Bubba's just in time for reservations. The food was great and we all had a big appetite.
Afterwards everyone went to the hotel to check in while Patrick and Karen took 80 east to the coast since we were so close to tour Tybee Island a beach town community. There's a large pier with many places to rent on the beach. Passing the light house and Fort Pulaski. Fort Screven on the way which was active until 1947 through the Spanish-American War and both world wars. Seven historic forts tell the history of Georgia's coastal defense system. We stopped for a drink at Crab Shack where there was a couple of attractions like alligator feeding, beautiful cats which are well kept and parrots that sing and mimic you at the gift shop. The place was on the water and the food was delicious. The portions were like something out of a magazine; seafood piled a foot high. I would recommend this place if you go to Tybee Island.
Friday night we headed to the historical district and did the horse drawn carriage ghost tour at night. We had a young college student who did a good job with 12 of us on board; but I think we stunned him with our jokes. We then headed to the River Front and shopped and drank along the water until late.
Saturday morning we met next door at the I Hop for breakfast; then jumped on the Trolley tour right in front of our hotel to tour the historical district all day. This was a hop on hop off trolley as we all when our own way. We stopped at places like City Market, Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, River Street, Cemetery, Juliett Gordon Low house where the Girl Scout originated. We saw many beautiful buildings which dated back to the 1700's which have all been restored. Savannah is the largest historical district nation wide being over 2 mile square radius. We meet and had lunch at The Pirate House. We then walked around and caught the trolley back to the hotel where we then had happy hour at Linda and Dick room. Some of us then went back down town an ate at Lizzy's. We drank and shopped for fudge strolling the river.
Sunday morning we went to the River front once again to have breakfast at Huey's over looking the water sitting out on the patio meeting the people walking by. We didn't want to leave but most of us headed back in the afternoon but the Jessing's and Malizia's stayed and moved to the Hyatt for the last night.
We loved Savannah and I would recommend it to everyone. It's a great get away which is romantic and only 4 hours away. If you have never been to Savannah please put it on your list of things to do.
